Lib Dems to cut Free on-street parking in Harpenden
St Albans Lib Dem run District Council leaders have decided to axe Senior Citizens' parking permits for the vast majority of Harpenden's pensioners.  Only those receiving benefits will keep their permits.

The Lib Dem run St Albans District Council is planning to drastically increase parking charges across Harpenden town centre. The council also plans to cut free on-street parking in Harpenden and Redbourn. This will make short shopping more difficult and expensive if you have to use the car park or pay at the meter.

Under the councils proposals free time limited parking bays on Harpenden High Street will become chargeable.

Residents of Redbourn face not only having to pay for their formerly time-limited free bays, but also axing of their free High street car park.

Some tarrifs will increase by up to 60%. For example, the Sunday charge for Amenbury Lane car park rises from £1.50 to £2.50.

This is going to damage the High Street traders even driving shoppers out of town

Teresa Heritage, District and County Councillor for Harpenden added,

These changes will have a negative effect on both residents and local businesses. I simply don't understand why the council is introducing them.
