More streetlights across Hertfordshire are becoming 'part night lights', as opposed to being turned on all night.
Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) said it "was implemented to reduce carbon emissions and combat rising energy prices".
Part night lighting has been in place across the county for a number of years.
Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) said it "was implemented to reduce carbon emissions and combat rising energy prices".
Now, the council says it has identified more streetlights that require changing to part night lighting.
A HCC spokesperson said: "On HCC maintained roads, and some on private roads that have public rights of way, we have identified 1,293 lights that are currently operating on a full night light basis but in fact should be operating on a part night light basis, in line with HCC policy.
"949 streetlights on the roads affected that light junctions, traffic calming features and the like will remain in full night light, as per our street lighting policy."
The council estimates that changing the street lights currently operating incorrectly on full night lighting to part night lighting will save around 8.6 tonnes of carbon and around £14,000 cost avoided in energy per year.
Full night lighting, which applies to around 40,700 streetlights across the county, are switched on at full power at dusk, then dimmed by 25% between 11pm and 6am.
Part night lighting, which applies to around 75,700 units, are switched on at dusk, dimmed by 50% between 9pm and 11pm , dimmed by a further 30% through to 1am, switched off until 5am, then switch on until dawn.
HCC says part night lighting combined with the switch to LED lighting has led to a reduction in energy consumption by around 53%, carbon emissions by around 77%, and cost avoided by around £8.8 million on HCC's energy bill.
